Planning to Work After Retirement?

Published:  September 1, 2015

Some Sonoma County retirees find great satisfaction, and some extra income, by working after retirement. If that's what you want to do, you should know that there may be limitations.

You can work for a different employer with no restrictions to your retirement benefit, but, before you go back to work for a SCERA employer (such as County of Sonoma, Sonoma County Superior Court, or Valley of the Moon Fire) you must have a bona fide break in service. California retirement law and federal tax law provide specific employment restrictions and consequences for retirees who return to work in the same public system from which they receive a benefit. SCERA has prepared a Separation from Service Following Retirement Summary, that summarizes the various regulations and the penalties that may be imposed on a retiree who does not satisfy these requirements.
